Open or closed toe?

Author: BallroomDancer
lady dance shoes

Despite the popularity of both types of shoes the ladies seem to be split right down the middle on this one. For ballroom dancing do you prefer closed or open toe dance shoes? Personally I prefer whatever happens to be stylish. If it matches the rest of the outfit then it’s not something I personally give a lot of thought. Honestly, though, I love all shoes. Just gimme shoes!

It’s especially the case with ballroom dancing, however, that you need something that works for both you and your partner. Obviously you want your own ensemble to match but you also need to coordinate with a partner, especially if you’re dancing competitively. Then there’s comfort to consider. Which style of shoe do you feel most comfortable in? Don’t choose something that’s uncomfortable just because it looks good. That’s a mistake I think we’ve all made at least once. I think the right answer to this one, is just go with what you prefer and let your feet do the talking.

Get High!!

Author: silly me

8-25-10.jpgWhen you love dancing as much as I love dancing, it is really a great disappointment to plan on going to a big ballroom dance and for some reason not get to go. Ballroom dancing is a big motivator for me. It keeps my spirits up and keeps me feeling physically well. When I get dressed up and put on my silver ballroom dance shoes and spend the afternoon ballroom dancing, it gives me one of the highest highs I have ever experienced. This is one high that does not take drugs or alcohol to get up there.

Tango and Waltz

Author: lovesdancing

The studio where I take dance lessons puts on a show about every 3 months to show the other students 8-18-10.jpgwhat you have learned and for you to see what they have learned. You are asked what dance you would like to do in the show. So the first time I was asked to be in the show, I really didn’t want to be in it because I thought I was not a good enough dancer, so I told my instructor a Waltz and a Tango. I thought I was cleaver enough to get him to pick the style that I would dance or not dance one at all, but he actually choreographed a dance to the music from “True Lies” that had me dancing both the Argentine Tango and the Viennese Waltz. I had never danced either of these dances before this. It really was a lot of fun and as much as we practiced, I learned a lot about ballroom dancing in general. For the show I wore a red and black blouse and a black skirt with red ballroom dance shoes and he wore a black shirt and slacks with a red tie and black ballroom dance shoes. I would not say I danced the dance perfectly, but I did OK considering I had not been taking lessons that long. I would do it again and I would advise everyone to be in a show if given the chance. It is definitely worth all the work, ballroom dancing itself is worth the work of learning.

Not to mention the different types of dances and the appropriate clothing for each of those. Enter all these varying circumstances and you can end up with an enormous number of stylistic permutations. The type of dance can be a great indicator of what you may be wearing while dancing. The five types of ballroom dancing are the Modern Waltz, Tango, the Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and the Quickstep. Before making a purchase it’s best to find the dance style you enjoy the most and consider the ideal fashion for your favorite. Whether it’s competition or recreation, the dancing shoe is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

A Great Night Out

Author: silly me

6-8-09.jpgHow much fun do you have when you go out for the night? A dinner, a movie, any kind of common nightly fun will cost you anywhere from $20 to $200 a night. The $20 is for just the full dinner at a fast food restaurant. If you go to a full service restaurant and go to the movies afterward, it will cost you at least $200. This may be alright for a date once in a great while, but if you really want to have fun, go to a club that has a good ballroom dance floor. Most of them have a good menu so you can order something to eat while you listen to a good band and dance the night away. The lady is in a beautiful red dress and red ballroom dance shoes and the gentleman in a nice dress shirt and slacks with men’s ballroom dance shoes. You will have a very romantic night dancing with each other and you get lots of exercise which means when the evening is over, you will be able to sleep a good sound sleep that night.

Local bands

Author: dreams of dancing

8-11-10.jpegJust about all the dance places will play some songs thoughout the night for ballroom dancing. Bands seem to adjust their types of music to accommodate the ballroom dancers if enough ballroom dancers show up where they play. Local VFWs and Lodges usually have really good bands that play all night Friday and/or Saturday night. So. put on your jeans or skirt and wear your brown ballroom dance shoes and go put for a night of listening to one of the local bands. Dancing a ballroom dance to the music will stir the interest of the other dancers and the band and before you know it, most all of the songs will be appropriate for ballroom dancing. They will even throw in a few Latin dance tunes occassionally.

The fun of exercising.

Author: dance freak

Ballroom dancing is one the most enjoyable past times to get involved in for exercise.8-9-10.jpg While ballroom dancing you work muscles in your body you would not normally work doing other enjoyable things. You would have to do many different exercises in the gym to work all the muscles you work while ballroom dancing.  Ballroom dance shoes adds to this workout. Ballroom dance shoes are designed to help you maintain a good posture while dancing and this falls over into your other daily routines. Ballroom dancing not only helps you get the exercise you need, but when you invest in the right shoes, they will keep you looking great long after the dance is over.

Are ballroom dance shoes worth the investment?

Author: ballrooming

8-8-10.pngHey fellow dancers, have you ever thought “What will a pair of ballroom dance shoes do for my dancing?” Well, I know a professional ballroom dance instructor who shared with me his experience with going through the “should I” or “shouldn’t I” make the investment of ballroom dance shoes. Finally, he purchased a pair of patent leather ballroom dance shoes. He regretted waiting so long. He said he seems to dance more like he wanted to the moment he took his first step in his new ballroom shoes. His foot work, poise and posture improved, in 8-8-10-2.pngshort he felt better about his dancing which increased his self confidence ten fold. All that equates to becoming a better dancer sooner because of the small investment of a pair of ballroom dance shoes.
p.s. Ladies, I felt the same way after I stepped on the floor in my new ballroom dance shoes.

Shortage of men

Author: silly me

8-3-10.jpgThere is a shortage of men at most ballroom dances for singles. Until the last couple of generations were born, it was not considered masculine for men to dance. The only male dancers around then were the ones that just bucked the system because they loved to dance, a few because they knew they could get just about any woman in the clubs if he danced well and of course the men that really weren’t, shall we say, very masculine. But now the younger men are dancing with no fear of being considered less masculine. I really do hope all these smarter, more carefree young men know or will learn that they also need to wear special shoes for ballroom dancing. Men’s ballroom dance shoes come a variety of colors and also come in special widths. Black/white or brown/white two toned men’s ballroom dance shoes look really stylish and are available in special widths.

Ballroom Dancing is a Sport

Author: dreams of dancing

All the buzz last week was that Gatorade officially said dancing was a sport.8-2-10.jpg The only dance they even considered a sport is Ballroom Dancing. And I totally agree that Ballroom Dancing should be considered a sport because you really work out while practicing or participating. You will find out that you also need DanceSport shoes to wear while ballroom dancing.  The only brand that knew to make ballroom shoes good enough for sports is Very Fine DanceSport Shoes. They have had that name for many years, that tells you how well their shoes are made and what they strive for in making their shoes. Other companies make just ordinary dance shoes, Very Fine makes DanceSport shoes and always have.

7-29-101.jpgDo you want to lose that stubborn last 10 -15 pounds of weight that you try so hard to loose to no avail. Well it may be that you just need to change up the workouts you are doing. Ballroom dancing is a great form of exercise and when you are dancing, it never crosses your mind that you are getting some of the best exercise. The swing, Salsa, Rumba, Cha Cha and some of the lesser known are the Jive, Lindy Hop, Quickstep, etc. These are your workout dances. Then you have the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, etc for your less active dances. In reality all of these dances take a lot of energy and you can make one of them as much of a workout as any other one. Wearing the right kind of shoes to ballroom dance will make all the difference. If you are dancing for a long period of time, like 3 or 4 hours in one day, low heel shoes would work best, but if you are only dancing about an hour for a couple of days a week, a 2 1/2 - 3 inch heel ballroom dance shoes would work fine.  Calories burned while ballroom dancing is 54 per every 15 minutes if you weigh 105 lbs. and as much as 128 in 15 minutes if you weigh 250 lbs.

Versatile Ladies Dance Shoes

Author: BallroomDancer
ladies dance shoes

If you are an avid dancer, you’re probably aware that certain ladies dance shoes are catered to particular dances. And if you dance regularly, it makes sense to invest in a variety of shoes. But if you only go dancing once in a while, spending hundreds of dollars on several pairs of shoes is impractical. Luckily there are some basic designs that work well with a range of dances.

Closed-toe shoes with a 2-inch heel and straps are considered the standard model when it comes to women’s ballroom shoes. A good pair will run about $70-$100, but since you are only purchasing the one pair, it will be well worth it. I recommend going with black, as it complements virtually any outfit and it suitable for an array of occasions.

VFW dancing

Author: ballrooming

7-27-08.jpgThe current economical times we find ourselves in is definitely for the history books. I don’t discuss politics nor care to listen to most other peoples political opinions. But no matter what the cause of this economic catastrophe we are in, there are some things that we can still do no matter how broke we are. That is ballroom dancing. There are too many places that you can go to dance that cost as little as five dollars for a whole night of dancing and listening to a great band. The local VFW here has an awesome band and they have “adjusted” their musically genre to satisfy the ballroom dancers and bring in more of the ballroom dance crowd. This doesn’t mean that the crowd that has always been at the VFW no longer fit in, just the opposite happen, they are learning some of the ballroom dances and some of the ballroom dancers are learning to dance their way. The original VFW crowd also have starting wearing the lower heel ballroom dance shoes.

Men that ballroom dance

Author: dance freak

7-26-08.jpgBallroom dancing is the ideal place to meet other singles or if you are married, it is an ideal place to go for a night out to enjoy each other and get some activity in too. Ladies, if you find a man that wants to ballroom dance with you, you have definitely found someone that is worth keeping. Make sure you dress appropriately for him and for ballroom dancing and make sure your man is wearing men’s ballroom dance shoes.

7-21-10.jpgIf you have a problematic back and still want to ballroom dance, it is essential to make sure you maintain the correct posture while you are ballroom dancing.
Shoes made for everyday or every night wear will not help nor encourage you do this. That is why you really need to buy some really well made ballroom dance shoes, like Very Fine Dance Shoes. Ballroom dance shoes are designed to help you maintain the posture you need to help your back. Ballroom dance shoes also have a special sole to keep your foot from sticking while trying to make turns or glide across the floor.

Senior Centers are for everyone

Author: ballrooming

Ballroom dancing really got a kick start several years ago with all the dancing shown on prime time TV shows. Senior Centers started giving classes and having parties associated with ballroom dancing.
7-20-08.jpgBut with the financial crises we are in right now, these Senior Centers are suffering a great loss of participation in the ballroom dancing act ivies. Some even have to close down due to none participation.
I can’t really understand this since it is extremely financially reasonable to go to these places for dancing and you don’t even have to be a senior citizen. It normally cost anywhere from $5 – $10 for a night of ballroom dancing or an hour or two of good quality ballroom lessons. And like me, if you are not a senior citizen but just have knee or feet problems, you can buy low heel ballroom dance shoes so your feet and legs won’t ache if you dance more than you are used to dancing.

Selecting Ballroom Dance Shoes

Author: BallroomDancer
Latin Dance Shoes

It’s not everyday you need a new pair of ballroom dance shoes, so many people are unsure of what they should look for when making their purchase. Comfort is obviously one of the most important variables, but style is also critical. Men’s shoes typically come with laces and a flat heel, although the heel on Latin dance shoes will be one to two inches.

There is certainly more variation when it comes to women’s dance shoes, and the pair you choose will depend largely on which dances you will be performing. One of the first decisions you’ll have to make is whether to go for open or closed toe shoes. Personally, I prefer open toe since they keep my feet cool while I dance for hours. Of course, style is also at a premium so be sure to find a pair appropriate for your class or event.

A one way connection

Author: silly me

Continue from: Leading and following with no effort………………….
Leading/following implies a one way connection (man to lady) but in really good dancing both partners are putting various different energies into the dancing at different times, and even though the leader is (usually) in control of things like floor direction, timing, and choreography, his awareness of the actions of his partner (how far did she go…is she finished with her line yet…is her weight over the foot I’m about to turn her on, etc.) are vital. Women follow, but men must lead _and_ follow; i.e., men must watch to see what the women are doing and compensate. The leader, who is in creative control, needs pattern-based thinking, with frames of reference that can include the whole dance floor, the space occupied by the couple, the spatial relationships between the two dancers, and the patterns of connection between the two. It seems that followers are mainly concerned with the last frame of reference, i.e., they react to the patterns of connection. Following is more fun than leading, because you (a) have much less responsibility for navigating and (b) don’t know what’s going to be lead next, so each dance is something of a “magical mystery tour”. I think the best part about being a follower is being led in patterns or syncopations that I don’t know! When led well, good followers execute moves that are totally unexpected or unpredictable but incredibly fun.7-11-10.jpg
Wearing the clothing to the part you are dancing makes the dancing that much more exciting. Red high heeled ballroom dance shoes look great while dancing a Tango.
Some leaders complain about how boring it gets to only do the same repertoire over and over all night long. They say followers have more fun because they’re doing different dances all night. But another leader writes: “A good leader never dances the same way with every person. The way you do the same dance changes from one partner to the next. Were you to see me dancing with a beginner, it would be difficult for you to tell that I’m other than a good beginner. Were you to see me dancing with one of the Champions (with whom I’m comfortable) you would see something quite different. Were you to see me dancing with someone I know well and with whom I’ve been dancing for years, you’d see something different.” In addition that learning the figures in the first place can be as analytical for the follower as it is for the leader, though the habitual execution of them might not be. Also, there is an added dimension for the follower, which is that you must have in your head the *entire* menu of movement possibilities at every point, not just the one you’re going to use. Since you don’t know what the guy is going to lead, you have to be ready to do *everything* and very rapidly react to the situations and signals you get to eliminate the things you’re not being asked to do. This is a skill that relies as much on spatial or “pattern-based” thinking as floorcraft, albeit in a less linear way. Note that the lady does not “lead” when she is stepping forward. The lady does not change the direction of a step unless a collision is imminent (and not always then), and the gentleman is then responsible for getting out of whatever position she got them in to if she does take control for a moment. Rather than saying that the lady ‘leads’ when going forward, it might be better to say the gentleman ‘follows’ when going back. The man always initiates direction of movement, but the person moving forward dictates the size of the step. They always step on the floor before the person going backward, therefore leading the way. And, while the ‘lead’ that determines the length of the stride is different from the ‘lead’ that determines what figure to do, the ‘follow’ associated with each of these is the same. For an example that lasts longer than a half bar of pivots or a bar of Viennese waltz, try continuous waves in Foxtrot. The lady can be going forward indefinitely in this figure, and she determines the distance traveled. However, she should not decide when to end the figure and go into, say, an impetus turn, just as in Viennese waltz she should not decide to start a flecker instead of a reverse turn.

Leading and following with no effort

Author: silly me

Continued from:  Partnering skills are vital………………………………….
Even with a routine, there is still a need to change directions unexpectedly, or completely alter a routine to deal with the fact that other couples are also dancing. In competition, there is *never* a place in the routine where lead-and-follow are not taking place. Even in the Latin dances, and even when the couple know the routine, you *must* lead. Most of the steps you perform in competition dancing require a special attention to lead and follow; you see this aspect where good competitive couples can make the dancing appear to take no effort, and therefore appears that no lead-and-follow is happening. That is an instance of good dancing, not no lead and follow. There is lead and follow happening, even when the couples are dancing side-by-side and not touching. It is just not typical; it’s often done with body placement and eyes. During side-by-side “solo” dancing the man has to watch for on coming couples and possible collisions so that he can adjust them or readily change the routine. In Jack and Jill Competitions, when you draw your regular partner you may not do very well since the judging is very highly directed toward lead and follow. It’s pretty obvious when regular partners are doing a routine w/o lead/follow. You can tell that a couple try to do a routine: they do the same steps but since no lead/follow takes place they will look like two individuals rather than a couple! I often test my regular partner by altering our routine on the fly. If other couples are on the floor you can never be sure what will happen. You may have to avoid a collision or simply forget what comes next! :-) Men, to truly lead well you must know the lady’s part to every figure you do. Leading and following are very different skills, and following well is every bit as difficult as leading well. Recognizing figures in a noisy, moving environment is a complicated task that is certainly equal to figure transmission. Of course there is one thing the leader does that the follower has no analog for - floor craft. The leader has primary responsibility for obstacle avoidance, and this can be a difficult task, especially on a crowded floor with couples moving at widely differing speeds. The leader truly has to do everything at once; he’s got to listen to the music, decide what to do and how to do it, think not only about his own movements but about his partner’s and those of all the other couples, etc., etc. And to make matters worse, when beginning his dancing career the man has to learn how to do everything at once, at once. Yes, the follower has to be able to perform a lot of actions, but the leader has to be able to perform _and_ initiate them.7-10-10.jpg
Wearing practice ballroom shoes will help to keep your feet from getting to tired or “worn out” while practicing over and over for a routine.
In addition, there are many variations that differ only in detail matters of raising an arm or not, or something subtle like that, and the leader has to be aware of the differences, and has to indicate clearly where the movement is going. Of course as a pro, he’ll manage to hold a conversation in a foreign language while leading a gold level sequence! Following skills are as equally important as leading skills. A dance is much more enjoyable when the leader need only give firm, not forceful, leads to his partner to indicate what is wanted, and when a partner senses body movements that serve as leads. For this to work, the lady must become sensitive and responsive to the feel (and sometimes sight) of leads, and not expect that her partner will (literally) carry her through the dance. The skill of following is greatly underestimated. Whenever I am trying to teach beginners about leading and following, I always have a hard time conveying the idea that dancing is a PARTNER sport–each person has to carry his/her load, or the whole thing fails.

Partnering skills are vital

Author: silly me

Continued from: Leading and following…a partnership…………………………
Partnering skills are vital to good ballroom dancing. It is very difficult to cover the technique in classes since this is probably the most complex element to couple dancing and takes many years of coaching to perfect. It is not a matter of simple ‘cueing’, but an understanding of the entire body and how to make 2 people move as one around a common center. Competitive dancers must work extremely hard with this and it is actually tougher with couples who are ‘used to each other’ than with perfect strangers. For example, when I have just had a coaching session working on my technique, the slightest change (such as a minute timing delay in a weight change) will totally throw my partner. She starts fussing that I don’t feel right anymore, or she will interpret the change as a lead to some other move that I used to do with her. However, I apply the same new technique to other competent dancers whom I rarely dance with and, voila!, it works beautifully!7-9-10.jpg
Dancing in men’s ballroom dance shoes allows the man to dance the perfect dance and also to look as good as he is dancing.
Apparently, a longtime partner can get very used to the feel of their partner, and it is tougher to practice any improvement or change.  Even competitive routines are led/followed. Any competitor taught “dance your own part and let your partner dance theirs, you don’t have to lead/follow” has been taught wrong! The judges can tell the difference between a couple with a real lead/follow “connection” and a couple that is just going through their routine. One competitor writes “Ballroom is social dancing - it is dependent on lead and follow, even in competition.  My partner and I have spent countless hours, with coaches and without them, working on *nothing* but this one aspect of the dance. Good lead and follow is critical in Latin dancing, both for the sake of speed, control and balance, but also simply because a step well-led and followed is a thousand times more pleasurable to dance for both partners.” Without even dancing with them you can tell the competitive dancers who can’t lead and follow; just look for the couples who keep running into others on the floor. Because they dance their own parts, they have not developed and practiced the dynamic process of leading and following (floorcraft) required to negotiate around obstacles and unexpected incursions into their line of dance.

Leading and following…a partnership

Author: silly me

Continued from: Lead and I’ll follow………………..
Dancing is an art form, despite the fact that it requires the prowess of an athlete. A good lead/follow is like a good conversation - you don’t have to yell, you only need to talk. As you get better, all you really need to do is whisper. Leading is not to be misinterpreted as “pushing or pulling”. Though poor followers often say, “If I have a strong leader I can follow”, they would need the force of an “Arnold Schwartzenegger” (after he’s properly warmed up) to move them across the floor. Equal sympathy goes to followers who encounter a leader who hasn’t the foggiest of what he’s trying to lead and can’t move rhythmically to any music, doesn’t know a slow from a quick and has no conception of what misery he is inflicting on his partner. It’s is not a leaders job to “haul” the follower around the floor every second, nor is it the followers job to just hang there like a sack of potatoes and be dragged. Leading and following is a dynamic process that requires a great deal of effort on the part of both members of a partnership.7-8-101.jpg
Women’s ballroom dance shoes allows the woman to stand with the correct posture to be ready to catch the slightest indication from the man to move in a particular way.
It is readily possible to lead a woman through a fairly intricate step that she doesn’t know _without_ apparent force. Possible, though it is not within the powers of most men. If you want women to vie with each other for the opportunity of dancing with you, this is what you must learn to do. It is skill, not force, you are seeking, (Grasshopper)! Men who claim they can lead anyone to dance well are not giving their partners enough credit. Women who say they can follow anything are not giving truly good followers enough credit. Experienced dancers never say such things, because it is simply not true. John Wood would not be world champion with just any woman - Anne Lewis contributes every bit as much to their success. To say that all any woman needs is a good leader unfairly detracts from the many very talented female dancers. It also places too great a responsibility on the man - it implies that all errors are his fault. Sometimes women say, “I just follow.” This demeans following as a trivial thing, which it most certainly is not.

Lead and I’ll follow

Author: silly me

“IF YOU DON’T LEAD ME, I’M NOT GOING TO MOVE!” and “DON’T DANCE ME INTO THE FURNITURE!” Leading and following that takes place between two people out on the dance floor can be analyzed down to the tiniest detail and is probably the most complex form of communication that takes place between two human beings… at its best and most highly developed level, it is exhilarating and immensely gratifying to the couple that achieves it, especially in improvisational/spontaneous dancing when you meet a partner who can lead (or follow). Leading and following are skills that require true intelligence and cognitive abilities such as learning, pattern recognition, and non-verbal communication.7-7-10.jpg
Wearing the correct ballroom dance shoes helps immensely in the posture and movement detail of both the leader and follower in ballroom dancing.
Watching a champion Jack & Jill couple is like watching an improvised composition of a piece of art. There are many misconceptions about lead and follow, expounded by both men and women. Untrained dancers sometimes seem to think that the lady is just supposed to go limp and the man bends her to his will. This is grossly mistaken. While some people may be willing at a beginning social level to tolerate this, it cannot last long - it is too exhausting for the man and too painful for the woman. A woman without good posture, correct body/foot positions and body tone is simply not leadable. The man cannot be expected to position every part of the woman’s body. A man without these qualities is not followable because the woman cannot distinguish the signal from the noise (and may be physically prevented from doing the intended figure). Leading should not be tiring - it is only tiring when the follower isn’t following.  Leading is not pushing or pulling. It is communicating an intention.

Why Wear Dance Shoes?

Author: BallroomDancer
mens dance shoes

For those new to the world of dance, the necessity of mens dance shoes may seem suspect. At first blush, many dance shoes merely look like dress shoes, which begs the question, what makes dance shoes special? To start, the sole of the shoe is specially designed for the dance floor, offering the dancer superb traction while not leaving any marks.

And as any man can attest, dress shoes certainly aren’t the most comfortable footwear option on the market. Dance shoes, on the other hand, are designed to strike a balance between style and functionality. While they are quite comfortable and can be worn for hours of dancing, their fashionable enough to be worn at even the most upscale events.

The Shoes Make the Man

Author: BallroomDancer
dance shoes and mens

When I was younger, I only needed two pairs of shoes: sneakers and dress shoes. As I’ve gotten older, however, I’ve come to realize that men need shoes from across the gamut. The world isn’t always black-and-white, and often something between the extremes of casual and elegant is required.

There’s no need to go over-the-top, but keeping your closet stocked with several pairs of shoes in varying colors will ensure you are prepared for any situation. Not only are your shoes a fashion accessory, but they also are one of the most pragmatic pieces of your wardrobe. If you are attending a wedding or some other gala event for example, it’s advisable to wear dance shoes and mens dress socks in order to provide the highest level of comfort on the dance floor.

Style 101

Author: BallroomDancer
dark brown ballroom shoes

Guys, it’s a fact: We don’t know what’s what when it comes to purchasing formal dress apparel. However, there’s a very precise method to purchasing your formalwear, and it’s not apparent at a glance. For example, when purchasing men’s dress shoes, you want to ensure that your shoes match your belt. It doesn’t have to be exact, but dark brown ballroom shoes and black belt is a definite mismatch. When choosing your pants and sports jacket or blazer, you don’t want them to match, but rather compliment each other. Combinations like navy blue and brown, navy blue and grey, and brown and grey tend to be the most common. In terms of your tie, you want it to match your pants but not your dress shirt. Ties that are one solid color are increasingly uncommon, it’s best to purchase a stripe, argyle, or patterned tie.

Taking these steps to create an outfit will be sure to impress those present whatever the occasion.  For job interviews, apparel like this is essential!

Over 12 months, a daily ballroom dancing routine uses up a total of 18,250 calories per year: the equivalent of 5.2 pounds of body weight.
Wearing true ballroom dance shoes is important for dancing safely. They are make specifically for ballroom dancing with a suede sole and a special heel. Make sure you get yours before getting involved in ballroom dancing.
A ballroom dancing routine workout doesn’t just help you to maintain a healthy weight, it also boosts metabolism, improves blood circulation and relieves depression.

The Resurgence of Dance

Author: dance freak

5-23-10.jpgThe latest dance craze is not any particular set of dance movements. It is one of the resurgence of dance in general, caused by the popularity of reality dance shows. Classic styles of dance, as depicted on these shows, suddenly are massively in demand. Movies, such as “Dance with Me”, “Take the Lead”, and “Step Up”, too, have contributed.

Shoes Make the Woman

Whether you are joining a beauty pageant, attending a promenade, a social dance with your officemates or are invited to come to an evening party by a loved one, you sure know that aside from the glamorous evening gown or cocktail dress you have to wear, you will be in great need for a matching pair of women’s dress shoes. If you are attending a function with dancing, be sure to pick a comfortable dance shoe that combines style and functionality.

Whatever the color or style of your dress may be, you should be sure to pick an equally beautiful shoes that will serve as the punctuation mark of your outfit. Dress shoes may be a strappy sandal or a closed shoe. But in choosing the right shoes for you, keep in mind that comfort should come with style, so you can be sure to stand out and stand tall all throughout the night.

Fred and Ginger

Author: dreams of dancing

5-4-10.jpgShame on Ginger Rogers, gliding around the dance floor - backward and in high heeled ballroom dance shoes, no less - with not even a hint of exertion on her face. The same goes for Fred Astaire, that sure-footed star of classic movie musicals. Even as the tails of his tuxedo chase behind, he is a vision of serenity, sweeping and whirling across the ballroom, seemingly without effort, the smiling Rogers in his arms.

Protection from the Elements

Author: BallroomDancer

women’s ballroom dance shoesWhether they’re formal or casual, high-heels or flats, or even a pair of women’s ballroom dance shoes, leather shoes are some of the most versatile pieces of footwear available. Some ladies are slightly reluctant to wear their leather shoes on a regular basis, however, and it has nothing to do with style. It’s just that many women are understandably fearful about the prospect of getting their shoes wet. In reality, it’s remarkably simple to protect leather from the elements and other possible damage.

Start by taking the new pair of ladies dress shoes out of the box and running a damp cloth over their exteriors. Think of this as working the same way as a facial scrub, which opens the pores and allows for a moisturizer to do its work. In this case, it’s the repellent that needs to seep into the inner layers of the shoe. Once the repellent has been applied, you can stop worrying about stepping in puddles or being caught out in the rain with leather shoes.

Stay healthy

Author: dance freak

4-25-10.jpgI encourage people to drink plenty of filtered water. This prevents dehydration which combats fatigue and keeps the mind alert. I have seen many top competitive dancers munch on garbage food for a quick pick up. I suggest a sports nutrition bar as a healthy alternative or a protein shake for muscle strength and endurance. This can be made in advance and taken to the practice session.  Eat and drink nutritionally savvy and wear the proper fitting ballroom dance shoes for the best dance life and dance memories you can possibly have.

The heart and lungs receive aerobic stimulation which improves stamina and endurance. The back muscles become stronger, and the legs, ankles and feet adapt with improved condition, and look really great in a pair of Very Fine Dance Shoes. On a mental level, one must memorize dance patterns, coordinate body movement with musical rhythm and learn intricate leads & follows. In general, this activity is a full-body toner and creates a positive mental attitude.

If The Shoe Fits…

Author: BallroomDancer
swing dance shoes

Wearing shoes that are too small is one of the most uncomfortable things that you can do. Some people think that wearing “snug” shoes offers support, but if your toes are fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle in your shoes you’re in for some trouble down the road. Shoes that are too tight can cause corns, calluses and bone spurs.

People who have narrow feet often have no trouble finding shoes. When you have narrow feet you can wear regular width shoes without causing harm to your feet. But when you have wide feet you should only be wearing extra wide shoes. Sizing is especially important if you are purchasing shoes for an active hobby, such as swing dance shoes.

Dance styles

Based on International Standards, ballroom dancing includes the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz. The Latin American dances include the Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive. In addition, American Style dance forms, such as the West Coast Swing, Mambo, Salsa, Merengue and Street Hustle (Disco) have also received International acceptance. Each of these dances require a partner in which the male leads and the female follows. Both the male and female  will look and dance their best when they wear patent leather ballroom dance shoes, which come in many heel heights for women and several heel heights for men.4-14-10.jpg
The standardization of basic steps and technique in ballroom dancing has resulted in an International Syllabus that is applicable worldwide. Its multinational interest and recent surge in popularity, achieved without much publicity, has led to its recognition as a great indoor sport and recreation. Ballroom dancing is a wonderful pastime and attracts many committed athletes. As a result, it is rapidly achieving the status of a competitive sport.

Ballroom dancing a sport?

Author: lovesdancing

6-24-09.jpgWhat about ballroom dancing as a sport? Make sure you wear your “sport” shoes, Very Fine Dancesport Shoes are high quality and reasonably priced ballroom dance shoes.
Webster’s dictionary defines sport as any activity or experience that requires bodily exertion and gives enjoyment or recreation. If figure skating or diving can rate as an Olympic sport, then why not ballroom dancing? A study by the Freiburg University in Germany, showed that a vigorous Rumba requires the same exertion as a foot or bicycle race over a similar period of time and burns the same number of calories (330 per hour). The International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF) is currently lobbying the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to include the Waltz alongside the pole vault.

Too Tall

Author: BallroomDancer
low heel ballroom dance shoes

With a father who is 6’6” and a mom that is nearly six feet herself, I was destined to be tall. Most women dream about long legs and rivaling the height of their man, but it certainly has its drawbacks. Large women intimidate many men, and it is often difficult to find a date.

It can also be a challenge to find clothes that flatter my figure, and don’t even get me started about walking in high heels. One of my favorite pastimes is dancing, but it is nearly impossible to be graceful wearing heels when you are over six feet tall. Luckily, I was able to find an amazing website that carried low heel ballroom dance shoes.

Allow the Instructor to Teach

Author: ballrooming

3-31a-10.jpg

The student is wasting their instructor’s skills if they do not allow the instructor to exercise their own judgment and abilities. Many students, who would not dream of telling their doctor what medicine to prescribe or their mechanic how to repair their car, will not hesitate to tell their instructor which part of their dancing most needs attention, and how they should be taught. Get the instructor’s opinion on what kind of ballroom dance shoes you need, but do not let him sell you a pair of expensive shoes when you can buy the best ballroom dances shoes at a very reasonable price. Instead, the instructor should be given rein to teach as they see fit, so long as they are working to the best of their abilities towards the student’s goals. If this path does not yield the desired results, then another instructor should be found.
Remember also that learning to dance is different from learning pure mental skills — sometimes understanding comes only after correct performance, instead of the other way around. The student should always try to allow the instructor to complete a presentation, since quite often full understanding dawns only when the presentation is complete and a “feel” for the action is obtained. If at that point the student does not understand, then they should ask for clarification. Otherwise, they should try to allow the instructor to exercise their professional skills — after all, that is what they were hired to do in the first place.

Tempos for ballroom dancing

Author: dance freak

3-29-10.jpgSome of the fundamental steps and theories learned in ballroom dancing classes can be used in all types of music, be it the classical waltz, rock or even disco! Just make sure the Latin ballroom dance shoes you wear are top quality. This is because of the fact that ballroom dancing always requires that the dancer moves to a normal beat pattern with a fixed tempo. The major types of music you will dance to be two: either three steps per bar or four steps per bar. In any case, you’ll realize that most songs that are optimal for dancing have such tempos, so you can use your knowledge of ballroom dancing with all other forms of music!

Red shoes

Author: ballrooming

3-26-10a.jpgIn the great epic movies like Gone With The Wind, even with such a powerful story you remember the great ballroom dance scene when Rhett makes a bid to dance with Scarlett. Then of course, we have movies like the Richard Gere-Jennifer Lopez starrer Shall We Dance where a simple guy learns to dance and prepares for the dancing competition.

So many movies over the years have had dancing sequences. Look at the old movies like West Side Story and the Little Colonel with Bojangles and Shirley Temple. And who can forget Dorothy dancing her way through The Wizard of Oz with her red ballroom dance shoes? Or the dances in The Sound of Music or Mary Poppins or My Fair Lady? Later, the dances grew more erotic like Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. Why today, you even have all the animated characters doing a great jig! From The Jungle Book to the Shrek series, dance has become part and parcel of most animated movies.

It’s always been great to watch ballroom dancing. The great thing about the movies is that they have preserved the different dances, ballroom dance shoes or the different ways of doing certain dancing on celluloid so people can watch and enjoy them for years to come.

Proper Ballroom Dance Attire

Author: BallroomDancer
discount ballroom dance shoes

For years I have been wanting to take ballroom dance lessons, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I mustered the courage to enlist in some local classes. When I attended the first class, I have to admit that I was ill prepared. I showed up in jeans and tennis shoes while the rest of the class looked like they were ready to attend a part of Gatsby’s house. Immediately after the class, I went out to look for some appropriate attire.

The primary item on my list was a set of ballroom dance shoes. I was flabbergasted at the prices of many of the premium models, but I was lucky enough to find a pair of discount ballroom dance shoes that were a fraction of the price. I also pickup up a few new pairs of slacks and dress shirts in order to look more presentable on the dance floor.

3-18-10.jpgSo you want to ballroom dance? You’re about to enter a world of class, tradition, and loads of fun. The good news is it’s easier than you can imagine. The bad news is you’ll still need to work. First of all, make sure you get a really good pair of ballroom dance shoes, whether you are a man or a woman, you will need them.
Ballroom dance is a somewhat artificial category including many styles of traditional partner dances from several parts of the world and different eras. The thing in common is the expectation that the dance is polite and the dancer’s dance-floor relationship somewhat formal (Ballroom dancing is never “Dirty Dancing”–even the more sensual styles such as the Tango are stylized. The sexuality of the dance exists in innuendo, not in hot and sweaty contact between the dancers).

Only Footwork

Author: dance freak

3-17-10.jpgGo out salsa dancing and ONLY do footwork. No spins, no dips, no fancy stuff.  If you can’t look good with ONLY footwork, you’ll never truly look good.  So take the challenge. If not at the clubs or at parties, at least at home when you’re practicing. Believe me you won’t regret it…
Now, this is for the guys and the ladies, you all gotta get this.  It’s about how you move your feet. Also, always make sure you  wear the correct ballroom dance shoes.  Without good quality ballroom dance shoes you will not have solid footwork, and you simply won’t be able to lead nor follow properly.
But how do you do it?  Just by practicing. Practice your Basic Step, and your Cross-Body Leads. Tie one end of a shoestring around your right ankle, then tie the other end to your left ankle. Then practice your moves with your ankles tied together but do it WITHOUT any music. Once you feel comfortable with that, make sure you start practicing proper timing with music. Because once you do that, you’ll master your foundation which is the footwork.

Choose your dance shoes wisely.

Author: silly me

3-9-10.jpgDon’t choose your ballroom dance shoes for the way they look but the way they feel. Sure, you need them to look good but they need to be comfortable to help you dance your best. You’ll find that a lot of shoes for dancing have an open-toed style but you might just be more comfortable in a closed shoe style. Then, even if you get stepped on, it isn’t too bad. You can also get insoles just in case you find the high heels a bit uncomfortable. Ill-fitting shoes can be the cause of a lot of aches and pains so choose wisely and well.

Preparation for the dance

Author: dreams of dancing

You need a lot of preparation before you dress up for a ballroom dance. You just can’t throw on any old thing and go out there. There is a code of dress that is adhered to and if you’re a guy, it will have to be a tux or a formal suit and if you are a girl, you have to have the right dress and have your shoes matched and your hair and make-up in perfect place. Unlike getting ready for say, a prom night, getting dressed for a ballroom dance requires a little more attention. This is because you need to pick the right clothes and the right shoes.
3-10-10.jpgThis doesn’t mean to say that there is a particular dress code for ballroom dancing, just that there are the right clothes. You do have the freedom to choose from a wide range but do remember that if you are doing a ballroom dance, whether it is a fast jive or a slow waltz, you need to wear something that flows well and does not get tangled in your partner’s shoes or around his legs. What is of course ideal is something made of flowing material like silk which does not tangle easily. The shoes definitely have to be the correct shoes for the type of ballroom dance you are going. For instance, Latin dance shoes can be worn for the salsa and many more dances.

Valentine’s Day Dancing

Author: BallroomDancer
women’s ballroom shoes

Every year I take my wife to some exciting venue downtown for Valentine’s Day. Since it has become an annual tradition, I’m not sure if it qualifies as a surprise anymore, but I try my best not to let the location be known until we arrive. This year I decided to take her to a ritzy ballroom for a night of dancing.

In our younger years, we went dancing on a regular basis, but this habit has ebbed recently. Since it had been awhile since our last dancing escapade, I decided to up the ante by also buying her a new pair of women’s ballroom shoes. The night of dancing was fantastic, and I think it may have reignited our love of the hobby.

My Little Dancer

Author: BallroomDancer
ladies dance shoes

I think all fathers dream of their daughters becoming beautiful ballerinas, and though dancer is a bit of an impractical profession, I always encouraged my daughter to follow her dreams. It started with a simple tutu and a pair of girls tights in second grade, but by sixth grade, my daughter Stefani was dancing in school plays, performances, and competitions.  When she turned 14, she went to a national dance competition, and won second place in her division.  I think it was then I realized that she had a real future in dancing, and I continued to encourage her every step of the way.

More than a decade passed, Stefani graduated from high school, then college, then moved to New York to pursue her dream. In a couple years, she was donning her ladies dance shoes in major Broadway plays, and then later joined the cast of Cats. I never felt so proud of her as a father than when she called me and told me she was going to be a part of Cats. It’s a great feeling, and it started with just a little encouragement!

Love and dancing

Author: lovesdancing

2-15-10.jpgIn ballroom dancing, as in a relationship, you must maintain control of yourself, take responsibility for your own actions and safety and stand on your own two feet wearing great ballroom dance shoes. If you don’t, your success as a dance partner and the likelihood that you’ll excel with your mate on the dance floor is unlikely. A common roadblock of this nature is having control issues, offering an example from my own experience: “I used to be afraid to let go of my weight during the downward whoosh of the waltz, a hallmark of the dance. My tightly controlled body movements were preventing my partner from swinging fully, preventing us both from swinging and fully performing the whoosh. Eventually, in order for us to be able to successfully perform the dance together, I had to learn to let go of my dysfunctional need for control.” Because control issues can interfere with forward momentum and excellence when dancing, you have let go of them. If you don’t, your success is doomed, just like it would be in a romantic partnership.

High Heels

Author: dreams of dancing

2-12-10.pngLike any sport, people can get as much physical exertion out of ballroom dance as they want to. Its vigorousness runs the spectrum from the leisurely stroll of a slow West Coast swing to the heart-racing workouts of the galloping quickstep and jump-intensive jive.
Still, even seemingly slow dance styles can work up a sweat. In addition to a good workou, wearing really high heals will build your calf and thigh muscles. 2 1/2″ to 3 1/2″ high heel ballroom dance shoes is a great way to build up your leg muscles.

Partner dancing

Author: lovesdancing

2-8-09.jpgBallroom dancing is a partner dance and in most situations involves a man dancing with a woman. This isn’t always the case but the simple question of whether ballroom dancing makes a man more attractive to women is what I want to get clear.
A quick scan of dance partner websites or a conversation with companies who run dance holidays will confirm that in the dance world men are in demand. In my mind there is no doubt ballroom dancing does make a man more attractive to women. Men and women can coordinate their outfits and look really great together when they wear patent leather dance shoes with the outfits.

Admittedly not all woman prefer their men to be groomed and polished but even the more rough and ready man, not unlike the author, can ’scrub up’ when the occasion demands and this can often have a remarkable effect on the fairer sex. Indeed looking smart may well be one of the main reasons why ballroom dancing makes a man more attractive to women. Looking smart includes wearing black and white ballroom dance shoes. Dealing with Poor Dancers

For as long as I can remember I have been aspiring to learn how to ballroom dance, but I have never had a partner who was willing to go with me. I have now been dating the same guy for over a year, and I was finally able to get him to breakdown and agree to go along. The first night we went I was so excited that I could barely contain myself.

Although he was well-intentioned, my boyfriend was far from an adept dancer. The first night we came home and I had to soak my feet for hours due to his misplaced dance steps. Before we went the next week, I decided to invest in some closed toe dance shoes for an extra layer of protection.

Be a confident man

Author: lovesdancing

2-1-10.jpgIt is often noted that women are attracted to confident men. Ballroom dancing demands that a man be confident and in control after all it’s a man’s job to lead the dance and ensure he makes his lady look nothing less than fabulous on the dance floor.  Wearing men’s ballroom dance shoes will indeed make the men look fabulous and the confidence to make the lady look the same. Again this act will indeed make a man who ballroom dances more attractive to women.

Men needed

Author: dance freak

1-28-10.jpgFirst off it has to be said that dancing suffers from a shortage of willing male participants. This alone will make a man more attractive to a woman if the woman is either a dancer or wants to learn to dance. Indeed the author and his good lady met through dancing and romance blossomed although romance need not always be in the air! So for practical reasons alone a man will become more attractive or at least will make himself into a commodity in demand should he decide to become a ballroom dancer. Men should wear men’s ballroom dance shoes just as women wear their ballroom dance shoes which make the dancing easier.

Beginner dancers

Author: ballrooming

At the beginner level, ballroom dancers will probably get a more vigorous workout with 1-26-10.jpgLatin dances such as the cha-cha and the rumba or swing dances, and should wear Latin Ballroom Dance shoes, says a ballroom instructor for the YCMA artEMBRACE program. At more advanced levels, dancers start really honing technique, which can make any dance style a workout. “The glutes, legs, abdominals are worked a lot with Latin dances,” she said. “Then the shoulders and upper arms. Because they’re ‘dancing in the frame’ together, both dancers have to hold this position, which is the equivalent of holding your arms out for a really long time.” She likens the benefits of dancing two or three evenings a week to the equivalent of what you’d get from going to the gym just as often.

Finding Shoes for Wide Feet

Author: BallroomDancer
wide ballroom dance shoes

Ever since I was little, I have had enormous difficulty finding shoes that fit my feet. It is not that my feet are excessively long—I am only a size 12—but they are extremely wide. Nikes and other narrow shoes have always been out of the question, and my casual footwear has often been restricted to Vans and skateboarding shoes.

Recently my girlfriend and I began taking dance classes at a local club, and I was at a loss as to where to find dance shoes that fit me. After scouring local stores without any luck, I decided to turn my search to the internet. Within a few minutes I was able to find a comfort and stylish pair of wide ballroom dance shoes.

Remember the revolving silver ball on the ceiling? The lighted dance floor? Men in white suits and gold chains trying a little too hard to look like JohnTravolta while the ladies twirled about in Quiana skirts and 3″ heels on their ballroom dance shoes? Try hard to forget. Frankly, these dancing skills are not adaptable to any music played at Cousin Leo’s wedding or the winter dance sponsored by your bowling league. You can ballroom dance to this same music and look and feel a lot better doing it.

The friends you make will be the company you keep at the local ballroom dances. You will keep each other informed of the dancing events around the area. Dancing and personalities

Author: dreams of dancing

Dancing with only one person all the time is great in the fact that you know what to expect from 12-11-09.jpgeach other and learn to move as they want you to. But the down fall of that is that you do not have the experience and pleasure of dancing with other dancers. You will learn a lot of different moves and learn to adjust your dancing to please just about anyone if you consistently dance with different partners. Men should not dance the exact same way with all women, just as women should dance exactly the same with all men. Personalities play a big part in the way people dance and that is why each dancer dances differently.
The clothes and shoes you wear will reflect your personality just as your dancing. Women’s shoes can be low heel ballroom dance shoes or high heels in a variety of heights. Men’s shoes also come in a variety of heel heights. Also both men and women can shoes in a many different styles and colors.

New dance steps

Author: ballrooming

There are as many different versions of a dance step as there are people teaching the steps. Each12-9-09.jpg person wants to put their personal touch to the dance steps and after a while others pick it up and then you have another way to do that part.
Men and women alike should know they have wear the appropriate shoes for doing more elaborate steps. Trying to do twist and turns in shoes that are not designed to do that will cause injures. Maybe even sever injures. Ballroom dance shoes have a special sole designed to allow the dancer to do twist and turns with ease of movement and no restrictions on the feet. Just make sure both the man and woman wear ballroom dance shoes.

Trophy balls

Author: dance freak

12-7-09.jpgThe dance studio where I take ballroom dance lesson holds a trophy ball dance about every six months. The idea behind this trophy ball is to let all the students show off what they have learned and to see what all the other students have learned. It is lots of fun and every body normally gives one of their best shows. They also put on their best dance clothes and ballroom dance shoes for the show. The women have a variety of shoes as you watch all of them dance, but most all of the men will wear black ballroom dance shoes. Occassionally you will see a man wearing men’s brown ballroom dance shoes. Some men even prefer wearing the two tone ballroom dance shoes, especially if they are dancing to the theme of the “20″s or similar times. No matter what shoes everyone wears, they look great and put on a great show.

Dancing Has Rules of Social Etiquette

Author: BallroomDancer
man ballroom dance shoes latin

For those people without much dancing experience, even the prospect of a social ballroom dancing session can be intimidating. As an experienced dancer, you should recognize that fact and keep it in mind when considering social dance etiquette. Wedding receptions and informal get-togethers are great places to practice your dance steps, but don’t criticize your less experienced partners.

People sign up and pay for lessons with a professional when they want constructive criticism. Hearing similar advice from a social dance partner – however well-intentioned – can have a disastrous effect on self-confidence. Good dancers should take the opportunity to relax and try out a few new steps of their own in their man ballroom dance shoes latin. By letting things go and cutting loose, you’ll contribute to your own good time as well as that of your partner.

Dancing is Art

Author: dreams of dancing

Ballroom dancing is one of the most famous forms of dancing in the modern era. 11-27-09.jpgHow can one define ballroom dancing? It is simple. You can not! Ballroom dancing is a concept of art that cannot be described by the use of specific dance steps and patterns, and neither can it be defined as just another form of dance!
For the real ballroom dance connoisseur, the true beauty in the concept of ballroom dance comes from its rich history and evolution of the various types of dances that are encompassed by the term ballroom dancing! Ballroom attire is as rich in history as is the dance itself. Flesh then black are the most poplar colors with the red ballroom dance shoes running a really close third.

Fundamental ballroom dance steps

Author: ballrooming

Some of the fundamental steps and theories learnt in ballroom dancing classes can be used in all11-25-09.jpg types of music, be it the classical waltz, rock or even disco!
If you use these fundamental steps to dance all forms of music you will be able to ballroom dance at just about any place that has a dance floor. Ballroom dance shoes come with a complimentary shoe bag. For a small price you can buy a leather shoe bag that has pockets and is very convenient for carrying your dance shoes and other accessories to the dance clubs.

Social activity

Author: dance freak

11-20-09.jpgAnother popular name for ballroom dancing is social dancing, simply because ballroom dances are supposed to be danced in couples and are essential at social gatherings! While ballroom dancing may be believed to be part of the elite class for hundreds of years, it has also been a valuable form of social activity leading to binding friendships and a lot of enjoyment for the masses!
But make sure you wear well made and comfortable dance shoes. Ballroom dance shoes come in many different colors and styles. I dance better in high heel ballroom dance shoes, but some women like the low heel ballroom dance shoe.

Muscle Memory Makes All the Difference

Author: BallroomDancer

ballroom dancing shoe

The world’s best dancers make even the most complicated steps look effortless. That’s because they are capable of turning their minds off momentarily and trusting in the practiced movements of their feet. You’ve probably heard of a concept known as muscle memory. It’s like a reliable groove that athletes achieve through practice and repetition.

Basketball players rely on muscle memory when shooting free throws. They don’t go to the foul line thinking about exactly how high to shoot the ball or how much power to put behind their shot. Muscle memory is a valuable tool for dancers, especially during a performance, because it takes nerves right out of the equation. The ballroom dancing shoe is free to do as it “pleases” or in effect what it was taught to do through hours of practice.

Tango!!

Author: dreams of dancing

So you have decided to learn how to tango and need a pair of tango shoes. 11-14-09.jpgThere are a few things to remember when shopping for the right pair of tango shoes. For the beginner you should choose a shoe than has no more than a 3-inch heel. They should be made of a good material for the purpose of supporting your feet. One of the recommended materials is cow leather.
Tango shoes should be purchased with a strap that is comfortable on your feet. They must fit well. A t-strap or a cross strap is the best for this purpose. There are sneakers made for beginners. This may be the best choice for starting out. The big difference between sneakers made for tango lessons and regular sneakers is the sole.

Stay mentally alert!

Author: ballrooming

A recent study at the Einstein College of Medicine, 11-10-09.jpgYeshiva University in Bronx showed that dancing reduced the risk of dementia, a brain disorder that includes Alzheimer’s disease affecting 6 to 7 million Americans over the age of 60. The result of the research led by Dr. Joseph Verghese, assistant professor of neurology, was reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in June 2003 (Vol. 348,pp 2508-16).

What is so special about ballroom dancing? “Dance is not purely physical in many ways. It also requires a lot of mental effort,” says Dr. Verghese. Dancers follow complex steps and figures. You have to think about them and remember them. Men have to think about what steps to do next and lead the women. And women have to follow the men, adapting to their movement and to the precise beat of the music. So, dancing keeps your feet and brains on the ball. Dancers do not just move on reflex. Dancing is a cognitive activity. It requires concentration and thus keeps your brain working harder and longer. But to keep your feet from over working while you dance, make sure both you men and women wear Very Fine Dance Shoes.

Dancing in the Movies

Author: lovesdancing

11-09-09.jpgSo many movies over the years have had dancing sequences. Look at the old movies like West Side Story and the Little Colonel with Bojangles and Shirley Temple. And who can forget Dorothy dancing her way through The Wizard of Oz? Or the dances in The Sound of Music or Mary Poppins or My Fair Lady? Later, the dances grew more erotic like Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. Why today, you even have all the animated characters doing a great jig! From The Jungle Book to the Shrek series, dance has become part and parcel of most animated movies.
It’s always been great to watch ballroom dancing. The great thing about the movies is that they have preserved the different dances and styles of ballroom dance shoes and clothing or the different ways of doing certain dancing on celluloid so people can watch and enjoy them for years to come.

Choosing the Right Ballroom Dance Shoes

Author: dreams of dancing

The simplest of ballroom shoes for women are the high heeled ones11-6-09.jpg. Ballroom shoes which have high heels are ideal for those forms of dance that have lots of fast pivoting and swiveling turns as well of those dance types that need inherent grace as par for the course! Some women are quite tall and tend to dwarf their partners with high heeled ballroom shoes. This is why even low-heeled ballroom dance shoes have come into the market, and are designed to provide the same functionality as high heeled ballroom shoes!

Papa Loves Mambo

Author: BallroomDancer
latin dance shoes

Before the Cuban Revolution of 1959, that island nation was a bustling tribute to the pleasures and excesses of capitalism. Havana was a haven for gambling, entertainment and late-night carousing in general. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Cuban musical genre known as mambo originated there in the ’30s. As is the case with most rhythmic forms of music, a dance craze followed hot on its heels.

Mambo fused swing with traditional Cuban steps, and what emerged became a hit in America almost right away. Late-night clubs in New York City and Miami held demonstrations of slightly homogenized versions of the dance. The furious motions of the professionals’ Latin dance shoes transfixed audiences. The dance is best saved for experienced movers and shakers, as it is generally agreed to be among the most difficult ballroom styles.

Basic Ballroom Position - Closed Position

Author: dance freak

The closed position is one of the many basic positions in ballroom dancing. In the closed position, partners hold each other while facing one another. The connection between the partners may be a simple handhold or more significant body contact. Wearing clothes that match certainly adds to the visual affect. Women can wear shoes that are color coordinated with her dress, red ballroom dance shoes11-4-09.jpg with a red dress.

Good ballroom dancing involves achieving a perfect closed dance position.

  • The lady should stand slightly to the right of the man.
  • Both partner’s feet should be slightly offset, allowing the right foot freedom to step between the other partner’s feet.
  • The man should hold the lady’s right hand with his left hand.
  • The man’s right hand should be placed on the lady’s back. He should cup his hand with his fingers and thumb together.
  • The lady’s left hand and forearm should rest on the man’s upper arm.

10-30-09.jpgThe smooth ballroom dance are definitely my favorite to dance. You get to live in a fantasy love romance every time you dance the waltz. You dress in a sultry dress and act the same way when you dance the tango. The clothes you get to wear for these dances is really exciting and they get you in the mind set you need to dance these dances. A flowing blue gown with silver ballroom dance shoes for the waltz is ideal and a red sassy dress with red shoes with 3″ heels for the tango certainly gets you in the mood for the dance.

Look Far and Wide for the Proper Fit

Author: BallroomDancer
Look Far and Wide for the Proper Fit

Where casual shoes are concerned, it’s not always necessary to find a precise fit. Comfort and style are of utmost importance, and so it’s perfectly possible to get by with a shoe that’s a half-size too large or a touch too small. It goes without saying that footwear serves a more practical purpose in the world of ballroom dancing. Shoes are available in a wide range of sizes and widths, and it’s crucial that a dancer finds shoes that allow her to live up to her potential.

Ladies with petite feet will want to consider ballroom dance shoes in narrow widths. By attempting to dance with clodhoppers that are a few sizes to wide, she could impede her dancing progress and make her overall movements more awkward. While a wider shoe can provide stability and balance, the biggest concern should be finding an appropriate fit.

Social Aspects of Ballroom Dancing

Author: BallroomDancer
Social Aspects of Ballroom Dancing

While TV shows tend to depict the competitive side of ballroom dancing, the activity is often enjoyed socially. Few pastimes are more conducive to romance than the combination of music and close physical proximity; ballroom dancing quite literally brings people together every single day. Beginner classes are perfect for those with two left feet, and no one is entirely impervious to the fun, therapeutic charms of letting loose on the dance floor.

Dancers require very little in the way of equipment, so beginners can take up the hobby with relative ease. There are no barriers to entry aside from one’s own tentativeness and inhibitions. Just select some ballroom dance shoes, and find classes that cater to the appropriate skill level; before long, you’ll be mixing and mingling with new people in a fun, pressure-free environment.

Staying Fit on the Dance Floor

Author: BallroomDancer
Staying Fit on the Dance Floor

A few months ago, I discovered that my unhealthy eating habits were beginning to catch up with me. I noticed the tell-tale signs of packing on extra pounds: the outlines of love handles and a bit of extra paunch in the belly area. It was time to make a bold lifestyle decision. In addition to cleaning up my act in the dietary department, I took up ballroom dancing.

It was easy enough to find dance shoes online, but I wasn’t sure where to go from there. I began looking through local newspapers in search of ballroom dance lessons. After a week or so without success, I finally located some lessons for beginners. Several sessions later, my steps had improved immensely and I was feeling athletic and nimble. Who says exercise can’t be fun?

Age is no obstacle

Author: dreams of dancing

Kathleen Wander is a prodigy, but not in the usual sense. In fact, she flips the typical concept on its proverbial ear.9-1-09.jpg Then she twirls it, dips it and waltzes off with it.
Embodying grace in motion, Wander has won first place in her bracket at all but five of 44 separate ballroom dance contests and placed second in a regional tournament earlier this month.
But the town resident had been dancing only two years. And she’s 89.
In the embrace of a waltz, she glides across the polished wood floor at the studio where she takes lessons, her eyes shining, her head held high, her feet twinkling in silver ballroom dance shoes.

Correct shoes

Author: dreams of dancing

8-31-09.jpgTired feet are not uncommon in the ballroom dance scene. Dancers will wear shoes that are not made for ballroom dancing and wear shoes that are too tight or too loose on their feet. Even wearing the wrong kind of dance shoe is bad on your feet. If you dance a lot and stay on your feet a lot, then you should wear practice shoes with a lower heel while practicing and standard ballroom dance shoes when dancing socially. If your feet hurt even when wearing good ballroom dance shoes, maybe you should try a lower heel on your shoe. Ballroom dance shoes should feel great on your feet and by all means buy shoes that look great.

De-stress!

Author: dance freak

I went to a ballroom dance lesson yesterday and was sitting and8-29-09.jpg waiting for the student before me to finish her lesson. She has not been taking lessons but about one week. There were two or three of us sitting and talking and putting on our ballroom dance shoes. When she finished she walked over to talk with us and just blurted out “this is such a stress reliever”. I totally agreed with her. No matter what is bothering me, when I ballroom dance it all melts away.

I wear black, brown, navy or gray slacks with a matching button up blouse. But when I decide I want to dance, it is a whole different story, I wear skirts and dresses that will swirl when I twirl and ballroom dance shoes with 2 1/2″ or 3″ heels. Since I have started ballroom dancing a whole other side of me has emerged. I am still a very conservative person, but one that really likes to put everything I have into my dancing.
