Swing dancing has undergone a serious resurgence in America of late. The Renaissance kicked off with the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s ubiquitous radio hit “Jump, Jive an’ Wail.” A whole new generation of dancers began to experiment with one of the medium’s most kinetic, playful forms. Swing’s reemergence was sealed with a series of Gap clothing commercials that featured youthful, attractive dancers swinging the night away.
Many couples just dipping their toes into the world of dance choose to learn the swing because of its loose spirit and emphasis on teamwork. Swing can be a simple or as acrobatic as the participants desire, and a pair of swing dance shoes is the only real prerequisite. Even though the rebirth of swing dancing began in the mid-1990s, it’s never too late to start to practice this timeless art.
