Ballroom dance music such as waltzes and polkas provide the beat to which the steps follow. For example, the waltz is a form of music in the ¾ measure which means that the first musical beat of the measure is dominant with the second and third beats being lighter as in: ONE two three, ONE two three. Waltz music tends to have a slow tempo. The sound is sweet, melodic, slow, and fluid. It is usually orchestral with minimum percussions or drums. This type of ballroom music lends itself to a ballroom dance with long and flowing movements to match the tempo and melody. The waltz features continuous turns and a rise and fall. When done properly, waltzers look as if they are gliding across the dance floor. The men and women’s ballroom dance shoes should have a suede sole that is made just for the ballroom floor.
